Biology Extra Credit

Instructions:
  • Each extra credit point option is worth the specified points towards your final course grade.
  • All extra credit is due no later than one week before course grades are due. 
  • You may turn in extra credit early anytime during the course, however NO extra credit will be accepted late...NO EXCEPTIONS!!
  • You may earn a maximum of 50 extra credit points per semester.
  • All extra credit will be added to the grade book at the end of the course.
  • All work must be cited.  Any plagiarism will result in a zero.

Extra Credit Opportunities: 
  • 5 pts- Vocabulary Flash Cards:  Create flashcards using a minimum of twenty terms from the current unit we are studying.  Flashcards must contain the vocabulary word on one side and the corresponding definition on the other.  On the side with the definition, you must also provide a word clue.  Your word clue can be a drawing, sentence, or diagram that helps you remember the word and its definition. 
  • 10 pts- Create a crossword puzzle:  Create a crossword puzzle using a minimum of twenty terms from the current unit we are studying. Write clues to solve your puzzle and include a key! Please use the crossword puzzle handout provided. 
  • 15 pts- Children's book:  Write a short story on the science topic or unit we are currently studying.  Make sure to include a book cover, the author, illustrations, and page numbers.  You will also need to incorporate a minimum of 10 vocabulary words in your story. 5 page minimum (not including the cover page).
  • 30 pts- Science in the news:  Find a science news topic (TV/magazine/newspaper) that relates to the current unit we are studying.  Describe the:  Who? What? Where? When? Why and How? of the article/television show, important vocabulary terms and your opinion of the topic.  Please use the provided Science in the News handout.  
  • 30 pts- Design a science game:  Design a game you that will help you and other students learn key concepts for the unit we are currently studying.  The format can be based on an existing game (e.g., Monopoly, Jeopardy, Pictionary, Cranium), or your own idea.  Create actual questions, answers, rules, and any materials that you will need to successfully play the game (i.e. game board).  The game should take about 20-30 minutes to play.  Please follow the Science Game Rubric provided.
  • 50 pts- Visit a science museum, aquarium, or zoo:  Go visit a science, museum, aquarium, or zoo.  Write a detailed summary about what you learned while you were at the museum, aquarium, or zoo.  Your summary must include at least one paragraph about how your visit related to a unit or topic that we covered in class. Your summary must be at least 2 pages in length.  Include a ticket stub or a current, printed picture of you standing at one of the exhibits you visited.
